New survey shows exams to be the biggest source of stress for teens

A new survey has found that Irish teenagers are missing an average of 10 school days each year due to stress, with exams and schoolwork emerging as the biggest sources of pressure. The study* of parents with teenage children found that 53% identified exams as the main cause of stress for their teen, closely followed by schoolwork and homework at 51%. This was significantly higher than other reported stressors, including social media and friendships (both 34%), while 32% said worries about future plans or college were a major source of pressure.

Almost nine in ten parents said their teenager experiences stress in a typical week, while two in three described their teen as very stressed. Among those surveyed, 43% said their child had missed school because of stress, with parents estimating an average of ten days lost over the course of a year.

Sleep was also heavily affected, with 90% of parents of stressed teens saying their child’s sleep had been impacted. One in five said stress was having a significant effect on sleep.

Commenting on the findings ahead of exam season, educator Tadgh O’Donovan, known as Teach With Tadgh on social media, shared advice for teenagers and parents navigating the weeks ahead:

“These findings show just how real the impact of stress can be for teenagers in Ireland, especially at exam time. For many young people, this period can feel overwhelming, so the focus should be on helping them build routines and habits that support both their wellbeing and their ability to cope.”

“It can be tempting to stay up late trying to fit in more revision, but sleep is essential for concentration, memory and managing stress. If a teenager is feeling overwhelmed, even a short walk or a break away from the desk can help clear the mind and improve focus. Good nutrition matters too, particularly foods that support steady energy levels throughout the day. Parents who feel their teen may need extra support can also speak to their pharmacist about suitable options, including products such as Zenflore Teen, which contains B vitamins to support mental performance and help reduce tiredness and fatigue.”

*The Teen Stress Survey was commissioned by Precision Biotics and based on 502 responses from parents of teenage children in Ireland.
